Carbine

Description

The much smaller and lighter alternative to Ellisian long rifles. The radical break here is that unlike every other Ellisian firearm, these were exclusively designed for antipersonnel use first, and anti-predator use second.

The model displayed here, a Chassepot Mk. VIII carbine, used a break-barrel reloading mechanism and chambers the 12.7x99mm cartridge. this round was chosen primarily because of how common they are and easy to get ahold of even in a time of war against other humanoid races. Though significantly less powerful than the larger cartridges employed by the full rifles, this round still packs a punch, enough at least to deal with humanoid opponents.

Though the weapon was designed to work well with standard ammunition, the Ellisians themselves designed many modifications to both the ammunition and the weapon's furniture to better suit its roles. Their favorite is a cartridge that remains intact until after it leaves the weapon's muzzle, then fragments into a small volley of tiny flechettes. Each of these had been soaked in a particularly vicious hemotoxin collected from local reptile species. A successful hit would cause the victim to bleed profusely from all orifices, including the puncture wounds made by the flechettes. Not the most directly lethal attack, but a definite morale-killer.

The version pictured here would likely be carried by scouts and sappers for conventional self-defense purposes, and as a specialist weapon by operatives as well. A more stripped-down version that does not include the suppressor and folding stock may also be seen commonly as an officer's sidearm.

This is nice, but technically, as it's a single shot weapon, it isn't really a carbine.
